Hemorrhoids: Causes, Signs and Symptoms of Hemorrhoids (piles)

Hemorrhoids otherwise known as piles are the inflamed condition of the veins inside or outside the rectum. Following are the causes, signs and symptoms of hemorrhoids or piles.

Hemorrhoids otherwise known as piles are the inflamed condition of the veins inside or outside the rectum. Piles arise from the increased pressure of internal or external veins around the anal canal. The hemorrhoids cause rectal bleeding, burning, pain, inflammation, irritation, itching and infection because it is difficult to keep the anal area clean and dry.

Hemorrhoids are usually not dangerous or life threatening, but they certainly cause you a lot of discomfort and complications. Sitting down or having a bowel movement disrupts the external hemorrhoids and, therefore, more pain ensues. Once you had developed piles due to some issue, it is hard to cure it completely. What is possible is to control the intensity of problem and to improve the condition by managing bleeding piles.

Causes of Hemorrhoids or Piles

Following are the causes of hemorrhoids. The main cause of piles or hemorrhoids is low-fiber diet, which causes chronic constipation. Constipation leads to small and hard stools that are difficult to pass. The straining in order to empty the constipated bowels and the pressure thus caused on the surrounding veins leads to piles.

Other causes include excessive intake of spices and condiments, bouts of diarrhea, lack of physical activity, obesity, general weakness of the body tissues, heavy lifting jobs, chronic diarrhea, mental tension, aging, anal intercourse and heredity.

Piles are more ordinary during pregnancy and in conditions affecting the liver and upper bowel. Pregnant women often suffer from piles as there is increased blood flow and heavy weight of fetus on the pelvic floor.

Signs and Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

The symptoms of piles may include painful swelling in the anal area, pain on passing stools, discomfort and itching in the rectal region, burning sensation, soreness and irritation after passing stools, a lump of soft tissue protruding from the anal opening, inability of the patient to sit, etc.

Types of Hemorrhoids

There are two types of hemorrhoids based on their location. A person may have both internal and external hemorrhoids.

External hemorrhoids: External hemorrhoids can be seen around the outside of the anus, and in external piles, there is lots of pain.

Internal hemorrhoids: These are present inside the anal canal and are not visible from outside. In case of internal piles, there is discharge of dark blood.

Internal hemorrhoids that are not prolapsed are usually not painful. Internal hemorrhoids are generally painless and make their presence known by causing bleeding with a bowel movement. If you notice blood covering the stool in the toilet bowl or on the toilet paper, which is common with internal hemorrhoids, make sure to contact your doctor as soon as possible.
